Black History Month Program

Our high school Black Student Union presented a Black History Month program for students and staff on Friday, February 24th. The program showcased dance performances, spoken word, a musical piece performed by members of our band, and more. Emceed by two high school students, Kenya and Cori’Ya, the hour-and-a-half program was a huge success.

Dance Performances

Those watching the program saw several dance performances choreographed by our very own students.

Spoken Word

Our Black History Month Program had four spoken word performances throughout the event. We began our spoken word selection with juniors, Niylah Walker and Ta’Neesya Landrum, performing a powerful piece called Black Love. The second spoken word piece called “Phenomenal Woman” was performed by Kylee Ramsey.  

Thirdly,  Denae Ashford performed a piece called “It Happened Years Ago.”  Our last spoken word was called “Primer for Blacks”  performed  by Ivie (E-V-A) Ezekiel.

Historical Black Sororities and Fraternities

The Divine 9 is an outcome of Historical Black Colleges and Universities. The Divine 9 consists of 9 Black Greek Letter Organizations. Fortunately, two organizations were able to perform and talk to students about their chapters.

The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated (AKASS) Mu Beta and  Epsilon Kappa Omega/Lambda Xi Chapter. 

We also saw performances from Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated Delta Kappa Chapter.

Student Black Women Businesses

Presenting L & K Creations by Elizabeth Sokunbi and Kassady Johnson. Kassady and Elizabeth, both have separate businesses showcasing their love of crochet. They’ve been crocheting as a hobby but decided to make a business out of it. According to the two, crocheting is a very calming but fun activity.

Fashion Show

The last performance of our program was the Afro-Fusion Fashion Show.  Students showcased African fashion from various countries.
